Suzette Shmiedel will be interviewing me about the impact on the Ottawa community of the work I do with music and mental health and how I arrived at my calling. Every week 'I Am Alive' promotes physical, mental and emotional wellness and is broadcast to thousands of listeners throughout the Ottawa/Outaouais region on Thursday mornings from 7 to 8 AM on CKCU 93.1 FM radio station. The host of the show, Mindful Suzette, is a mindfulness and stress management consultant of the Wellness Learning Centre. I am presently teaching at the Bluesfest School of Music and Art, have been teaching guitar and ukulele privately for many years and I am a U of O music grad. Basics covered include: instrument selection, strings, chords to popular songs, singing accompaniment, strumming patterns, timing etc. I use a proven non-technical and fun method that gets you up and playing very quickly. Family Ukulele (6+yrs)

The ukulele’s popularity continues to grow because it is relatively easy to learn, good for small hands and has a sweet, happy sound. The uke opens the door to the larger world of musical instruments in a fun way. Together the groups will learn chords, how to read chords, strum patterns, and then put it all together to play songs. Course fee includes one adult and one child. An additional family member can join at a reduced fee.

'Creative Expression and Dementia' - Artswell Team

I will be exposing conference goers at the plenary session to the magical effects of a 'live' therapeutic drumming session so that they experience first hand how artistic activities engage them actively and create a group identity. We believe that these kind of activities lessen the impact of Alzheimers on people affected by the disease by improve the quality of their lives. The other members of the Artswell team are Tracy Luciani who will be talking about the work she does through Artswell and Renate Ysseldyk who will be discussing current research at Careton University on the effects of artistic activity on health.
