Rethinking Dementia: The Role of Music and Art in Enhancing the Lives of Patients and Residents in Care Tracy Luciani, arts and wellness therapist, Bruyère Continuing Care Renate Ysseldyk, Department of Health Sciences, Carleton University Angela Paric, Carleton University Nigel E. The presenters will share and show, through photographs, their journey of creating art with older adults living with dementia, in long-term care and complex continuing care settings. Also discussed will be the role of the arts in enhancing quality of life, as a form of communication when words often fail and as an important way of nurturing creative expression among older adults. Through a 'live' demonstration, conference-goers will experience first hand the uplifting energy and wellness generated by a therapeutic drumming circle made up of seniors with early dementia, and will be invited to participate in it by playing rhythm instruments supplied at their tables!

LEARN TO PLAY KLEZMER UKULELE! This eight lesson introductory course will have you playing klezmer ukulele before Christmas and Chanukah! A fun-filled musical experience for everyone who has ever wanted to play a string instrument. Participants must provide their own instruments either borrowed, rented or purchased. Entry level ukuleles’ (Mahalo soprano) cost about $40. Information for purchasing will be made available to registrants. Instructor: Nigel E. Harris is a local Ottawa ukulele teacher and all around music facilitator. A new Guinness Book of World Records event is to be made by having the 'most nationalities drumming together for more than 5 minutes' ! It's Ukulele Jam night in town: The Bluesfest School of Music and Art welcomes Nigel E. Harris as our host for our monthly Jam. Family Ukulele (6+yrs)

The ukulele’s popularity continues to grow because it is relatively easy to learn, good for small hands and has a sweet, happy sound. The uke opens the door to the larger world of musical instruments in a fun way. Together the groups will learn chords, how to read chords, strum patterns, and then put it all together to play songs. Course fee includes one adult and one child. An additional family member can join at a reduced fee.
